For decades, we’ve been told that we live in an era of unparalleled sexual liberation. Gone are the days of rigid morality, social shame, and repressive norms — or so we believed. The sexual revolution promised choice, empowerment, and a world where we could embrace desire without fear.
But somewhere along the way, that promise turned into something else.
Instead of true freedom, many of us feel trapped in an exhausting cycle of performance, unrealistic expectations, and detachment from real intimacy. The chains of the past have been replaced by new ones — ones that are harder to see but just as heavy to bear.
The Illusion of Liberation
One evening, while watching an old documentary with my partner, I saw footage from the 1960s. Thousands of young people in Detroit celebrated “free love,” dancing in the streets, proclaiming a new world without sexual repression.
